Poinsett County, Ark. — Former Memphis Grizzlies guard Tony Allen was taken into custody Wednesday on drug charges following a traffic stop roughly 50 miles east of Memphis, according to the Associated Press.
Deputies who pulled the vehicle over reported discovering a leafy substance later confirmed as marijuana on Allen, 42. Officers searched the car and located additional drug-related items, Action News 5 reported. The driver, identified as William Hatton, allegedly told authorities that some marijuana paraphernalia belonged to him. A cigarette box containing a substance later determined to be cocaine was also recovered inside the vehicle.
The arrest comes less than a year after Allen pleaded guilty in a federal health-insurance fraud scheme. In April 2023, he received three years of supervised probation and was ordered to perform community service.
Allen spent seven seasons with Memphis from 2010 to 2017, anchoring the franchise’s “Grit and Grind” era. A six-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection, he helped the Grizzlies reach the playoffs in six of those seasons, and the team later retired his No. 9 jersey.
