ESPN’s latest long-range power rankings, released this week, show notable shifts for three prominent Eastern Conference franchises: Miami, Boston and Indiana.

Heat Move Up Despite Recent Playoff Struggles

Miami climbed three positions in the projections, even after consecutive first-round exits that were largely one-sided. According to ESPN, the rise stems from top-10 grades in management, market appeal and financial flexibility. With Jimmy Butler no longer on the roster, the club is not forecast to enter the luxury-tax bracket, potentially creating significant spending room in the 2026 and 2027 off-seasons.

Celtics Rely on Core to Rebound

A year removed from celebrating an NBA title, Boston’s fortunes changed quickly. Jayson Tatum suffered an Achilles injury in May, the team was eliminated in the second round, and cost-cutting trades sent Kristaps Porziņģis and Jrue Holiday elsewhere. Even so, ESPN notes that the Celtics still feature a core of Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Derrick White, with Brad Stevens overseeing basketball operations and Joe Mazzulla on the sideline. Provided Tatum returns to full health by 2026-27, the network projects a swift rebound.

Pacers Face Uncertainty After Haliburton Injury

Indiana’s outlook shifted from promising to uncertain after Tyrese Haliburton ruptured his Achilles during the franchise’s run to a Game 7 in the NBA Finals. ESPN writes that, had the injury not occurred, the Pacers might have cracked the top 10 of the future rankings. Haliburton is expected back for the final two seasons covered by the projections, but the departure of center Myles Turner raises new issues, particularly regarding ownership’s willingness to pay the luxury tax.
