PHILADELPHIA — Center Joel Embiid has ramped up his workload following spring arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and has begun participating in five-on-five drills, according to PHLY Sports’ Derek Bodner. The 76ers are evaluating the former MVP daily, and the club still wants him to clear several checkpoints before clearing him for game action.

Embiid appeared in only 19 games last season because of knee trouble, averaging 23.8 points and 8.2 rebounds—both below his career marks of 27.9 points and 11.2 rebounds entering 2024-25.

George, Watford Still Limited

Forward Paul George, who underwent his own arthroscopic procedure on the same knee later than Embiid, remains confined to individual workouts. Bodner reports that the intensity of those sessions has increased and the veteran is expected to join team activities in the coming days.

Off-season addition Trendon Watford is sidelined with a right hamstring strain and will miss Friday’s preseason contest. PHLY Sports’ Kyle Neubeck notes that imaging revealed no structural damage and the forward should expand his on-court work within a week.

Nurse Weighs Three-Guard Approach

Head coach Nick Nurse said a three-guard opening lineup is under consideration. In that scenario, Tyrese Maxey, rookie VJ Edgecombe and Quentin Grimes would start, with fellow rookie Jared McCain entering the mix once healthy.

Grimes, who spent three months as a restricted free agent before accepting his one-year qualifying offer, told reporters he holds no grudges over negotiations. The guard, set to reach unrestricted free agency in 2026, said he hopes to remain with Philadelphia long-term but is focused on helping the team win now.
