January 15, a Thursday on the league calendar, marks the first day 11 recently re-signed players can officially be included in trades, expanding the pool of movable contracts across the NBA.
Why eligibility changed today
Under collective bargaining rules, players who re-upped with their previous team, received at least a 20 percent raise, signed above the minimum salary, and were brought back with Bird or Early Bird rights face a one-month restriction beyond the standard December 15 window. That extra month expired today.
Newly eligible players
The following 11 players can now be dealt:
- Santi Aldama, Memphis Grizzlies
- Josh Giddey, Chicago Bulls
- Quentin Grimes, Philadelphia 76ers
- Isaiah Jackson, Indiana Pacers
- Jonathan Kuminga, Golden State Warriors
- Tre Mann, Charlotte Hornets
- Sam Merrill, Cleveland Cavaliers
- Davion Mitchell, Miami Heat
- Paul Reed, Detroit Pistons
- Naz Reid, Minnesota Timberwolves
- Ryan Rollins, Milwaukee Bucks
Who still has to wait
Several notable names remain unavailable for trade but will become eligible soon. Sacramento guard Russell Westbrook becomes movable tomorrow, followed by Atlanta’s Keaton Wallace on January 18, New Orleans center DeAndre Jordan on January 23, New York forward Mikal Bridges on February 1, Los Angeles guard Luka Doncic on February 2, Sacramento forward Precious Achiuwa on February 4, and San Antonio guard De’Aaron Fox on February 4.
Other contracts, including reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s deal and all 10-day agreements, cannot be traded before the league’s February 6 deadline.
