Rookie guard VJ Edgecombe delivered a historic first impression, scoring 34 points in his NBA debut as the Philadelphia 76ers edged the Boston Celtics on opening night. According to the team, no player had produced that many points in a debut since Wilt Chamberlain. Edgecombe also collected seven rebounds, handed out three assists and knocked down five three-pointers.

Head coach Nick Nurse said the 19-year-old “looked comfortable” and praised his decision-making. The rookie’s lone hiccup came at the foul line, where he missed two free throws with 7.3 seconds left and Philadelphia leading by one. Boston failed to capitalize, allowing Edgecombe to help seal the win.

Tyrese Maxey fueled the offense as well, pouring in 40 points on 24 shot attempts while committing just one turnover. The All-Star guard added six assists in what he called the beginning of a new leadership chapter for the Sixers.

Nets

Cam Thomas opted to accept Brooklyn’s qualifying offer after an extended negotiation period, setting him up for unrestricted free agency in 2026. Speaking with reporters, the 23-year-old said contract concerns can “take care of themselves,” noting his priority is staying on the court after injuries limited him last season. Thomas reported to camp lighter and aims to expand his game beyond scoring.

Kings

Russell Westbrook acknowledged that suiting up for the Sacramento Kings feels unusual but said he is eager to contribute both on and off the floor. The former MVP, acquired during the offseason, emphasized mentoring younger teammates and understanding “what inspires them” as key parts of his leadership approach. Asked whether this season could be his last, Westbrook dismissed the idea.

The Kings are not widely viewed as contenders, yet Westbrook indicated he still expects to make an impact in Sacramento.
