The Orlando Magic have contacted several clubs about moving veteran guard Tyus Jones for second-round draft picks, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line. Jones, 29, accepted a one-year, $7 million deal with Orlando last summer but is averaging only 3.2 points and 2.4 assists in 16.5 minutes over 40 games (eight starts) while shooting 35.3% from the field and 29.5% from three.
Orlando sits roughly $5.6 million above the luxury-tax threshold and could look to get under the line before the deadline. With Paolo Banchero’s projected maximum rookie-scale extension set to begin in 2026/27, avoiding the tax now would delay the repeater clock by one year.
Additional notes from around the East
Detroit Pistons: Although Detroit is not pursuing a major in-season overhaul, the front office has tested the market on Jaden Ivey, Fischer reports. The 2022 No. 5 pick, coming off a significant leg injury, is down to 16.9 minutes per game and will reach restricted free agency this summer.
Indiana Pacers: Still searching for a long-term solution at center, Indiana has asked about Onyeka Okongwu. There is no evidence Atlanta has engaged on the 23-year-old, who is posting career highs of 16.0 points and 31.9 minutes a night.
Toronto Raptors: Rival executives view Toronto as one of the league’s most aggressive clubs ahead of the deadline. The Raptors were the lone team besides Washington with genuine interest in Trae Young, have been linked to Anthony Davis and Domantas Sabonis, and are considered a possible bidder for Ja Morant.
Philadelphia 76ers and Memphis Grizzlies: The two teams held trade discussions in mid-December that did not include Morant, Fischer adds. Given recent collaboration, Philadelphia and Memphis could join forces again if either needs a third-team partner to complete a deal.
