The Eastern Conference postseason picture remains crowded, with several teams scrambling to secure the fifth and sixth seeds and dodge the NBA’s Play-In Tournament.

Entering the season’s final stretch, the Toronto Raptors hold fifth place at 36-27. Right behind them, the Orlando Magic sit sixth at 35-28, while the Miami Heat own the same 35-28 mark but drop to seventh because Orlando owns the tiebreaker.

The chase does not end there. The Philadelphia 76ers, Atlanta Hawks and Charlotte Hornets remain within striking distance, and the Milwaukee Bucks linger further back.

Which team feels the most heat?

Writers from The Athletic offered differing views on which club faces the greatest urgency.

Tony Jones singled out Philadelphia. After last season’s 24-58 collapse, expectations soared when the 76ers showed early promise. Consistency has been elusive, and injuries have complicated matters: Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George are all expected to miss at least the next two games. Philadelphia has already slipped into Play-In territory, making the upcoming slate critical to the franchise’s direction. Simply reaching the playoffs would mark clear progress from last year’s finish, Jones noted.

Eric Nehm considered Milwaukee the obvious answer after its subpar season but ultimately pointed to Orlando. The Magic finished fifth two years ago and seventh last season; another short postseason run could prompt questions about whether the current roster has hit its ceiling.

Josh Robbins added that financial factors loom for Orlando, with Paolo Banchero’s max extension set to begin next year and significant money already committed to Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs. Coupled with an offense that has struggled in half-court sets, the months ahead may prove pivotal for Orlando’s long-term plans.

With only a handful of games separating fifth from the Play-In zone, every result over the coming weeks is positioned to reshape the Eastern Conference bracket.
