Washington, Brooklyn and Cleveland each enter the week with distinct priorities as preseason play continues across the Eastern Conference.
Wizards
The Washington Wizards are counting on internal development led by rookie center Alex Sarr, selected No. 2 overall in June. Five scouts who spoke with The Athletic offered varied projections for the 7-footer, agreeing he must add strength and improve his perimeter shot to reach his ceiling. None of the evaluators envisioned Sarr as a top-two option on a championship team, though several believe he can become a dependable starter once his frame fills out.
Sarr, who currently weighs less than some NBA wings, told reporters he expects to make his debut in Sunday’s preseason opener against the Toronto Raptors. The matchup will mark the first organized game in which he faces his older brother, Raptors big man Olivier Sarr.
Nets
Brooklyn Nets governor Joe Tsai labeled the upcoming campaign “a rebuilding year” during an appearance on the All-In Podcast. “We have one first-round pick in 2026, and we hope to get a good pick,” Tsai said, outlining the franchise’s draft-centric strategy. The comment could draw league scrutiny because the NBA discourages any suggestion of intentional losing.
The Nets traded several veterans last season, selected five rookies in June and now have what projects to be the league’s youngest roster. Oddsmakers have set Brooklyn’s over/under at 20.5 wins. General manager Sean Marks has emphasized player development over immediate results after consecutive sub-.500 seasons.
Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers will visit the Boston Celtics on Sunday still looking for their first preseason victory after two losses to the Chicago Bulls. Forward De’Andre Hunter has meshed well with Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen and Donovan Mitchell, providing efficient scoring and solid defense. Mobley continues to extend his range, while rookie guard Tyrese Proctor and second-year guard Craig Porter Jr. have both flashed playmaking ability.
Recent additions Lonzo Ball and Larry Nance Jr. are easing into the rotation, giving Cleveland added size and passing. The Cavaliers close the exhibition slate Tuesday at home against the Detroit Pistons, open the regular season Oct. 22 at Madison Square Garden versus the New York Knicks and hold their home opener Oct. 26 against the Milwaukee Bucks.
