PHILADELPHIA — Veteran guard Eric Gordon said he intends to guide rookie lottery pick VJ Edgecombe as the 76ers open training camp. Speaking with the Philadelphia Inquirer, the 18-year pro explained that their connection on the Bahamas national team laid the groundwork for his new responsibility. “At my age, in my phase of my career, you have to mentor,” Gordon noted, adding that he still expects to space the floor and “knock down shots” when he is on the court.

Brooklyn

First-round selection Danny Wolf delivered five assists in 15 minutes during the Nets’ preseason opener, showcasing the playmaking that made him a draft target. The 7-footer told reporters he is comfortable initiating offense when head coach Jordi Fernandez calls his number, though he admitted a few passes were rushed. Wolf averaged 4.2 assists last season at Michigan, the second-highest single-season mark recorded by a college player listed at 7 feet or taller, and Brooklyn expects his vision to anchor the second unit.

Charlotte

The Hornets have waived forward DJ Rodman, the club announced. Rodman, son of Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman, initially signed a training-camp deal in September, was waived, then re-signed last week. The 6-foot-6 wing split last season in the G League between Capital City and Maine, posting 6.8 points and 5.7 rebounds over 25 games. If unclaimed off waivers, he is expected to join Charlotte’s affiliate in Greensboro, where a 60-day stint could earn him up to $85,300 in bonus pay.
