Early Season Setbacks Shape Southwest Division Storylines

Dallas — Anthony Davis’ latest injury has the Mavericks weighing long-term options reminiscent of last year’s Luka Doncic saga. The 32-year-old center arrived at training camp at 268 pounds, roughly 15 pounds over his 2024/25 playing weight, and logged four productive games before a left calf strain forced him out of the Oct. 29 contest. He has missed every game since and is listed as doubtful for Friday night’s NBA Cup meeting with the Grizzlies.

Davis is owed $58.5 million in 2026/27 and holds a $62.8 million player option for 2027/28. Beginning next summer, he can tack on three additional years and push the total value to $218.5 million. General manager Nico Harrison must decide whether to invest in another expensive extension after last season’s decision to move Doncic due in part to conditioning concerns.

Grizzlies keep faith in Morant

Memphis’ recent sideline dispute between Ja Morant and the coaching staff has not damaged his partnership with Jaren Jackson Jr., according to league sources. General manager Zach Kleiman remains committed to the duo, has not explored trade scenarios for Morant, and has received no trade request from the guard. Several teammates reportedly backed Morant after his clash with coach Tuomas Iisalo over substitution patterns.

Pelicans weigh Willie Green’s future

New Orleans opened the season 0-6, prompting internal talks about Willie Green’s job security. Front-office frustration centers on several rotation decisions, notably giving rookie guard Jeremiah Fears minutes ahead of Jordan Poole, a move that visibly irritated Poole and some teammates. Additional concern arose from starting veteran center DeAndre Jordan over second-year big man Yves Missi and limiting minutes for 2024 lottery pick Derik Queen, displeasing lead executive Joe Dumars.

Roster notes

The Grizzlies assigned rookie center Zach Edey and forward GG Jackson II to their G League affiliate for practice work. Edey is entering the projected early stage of his return timeline after ankle surgery. Meanwhile, Charles Bassey’s 10-day hardship contract expired Wednesday, ending his stint with the club.
