Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. said Friday that head coach Steve Kerr will decide whether he remains on the bench after his contract expires at the end of the upcoming season.
Speaking on 95.7 The Game’s “Steiny & Guru” show, Dunleavy acknowledged the team is entering unfamiliar territory with Kerr in the final year of his deal but stressed the organization will not push for an immediate extension.
“Yeah, I mean, I guess technically there is [uncertainty],” Dunleavy told the hosts. “This isn’t really a regular situation with a head coach where he’s in the last year of his deal. We know what it is with Steve … as far as I’m concerned, he can stay as long as he wants.”
Kerr, 59, signed a two-year extension in February 2024 and will coach the 2024-25 campaign under that agreement. Dunleavy said the front office is comfortable waiting until after the season to revisit the matter.
“It’s hard to see Steve moving on, or to see Steph finish his career without Steve on the sidelines,” Dunleavy noted. “We’re going to go on Steve’s terms. Right now, he just wants to see how the season goes.”
Kerr has led Golden State since 2014, guiding the team to four NBA championships and six Finals appearances.
