New Orleans — Newly appointed executive vice president of basketball operations Joe Dumars laid out his blueprint for the Pelicans during a media session on Monday, touching on Zion Williamson’s role, roster expectations and several offseason moves.

Accountability for Williamson
Dumars said he has stressed “responsibility and accountability” to Williamson, noting that the former No. 1 overall pick must fully understand the “heightened expectations” that accompany his talent level.

Compete-first approach
In a separate morning meeting with head coach Willie Green and his staff, Dumars told the group he has no preset win-loss target for 2025-26. Instead, he expects the Pelicans to “compete at a high level every night,” believing victories will follow consistent effort.

Daily dialogue with coaching staff
The front-office chief said he speaks with Green “every day” and called his offseason communication with the entire coaching staff “vital” to shaping the organization’s direction.

Derik Queen acquisition not ‘playoffs-or-bust’
Addressing the draft-night trade that brought rookie center Derik Queen to New Orleans, Dumars rejected the notion that the move signals a postseason-or-else mandate. He said the club remains focused on building a deep roster capable of competing each game.

Queen’s rehab and conditioning
While Queen continues to recover from wrist surgery, the Pelicans have urged the rookie to improve his conditioning, Dumars added.

Adjustments to medical protocols
After multiple injury-plagued seasons, Dumars spent “extended time” with the medical staff and made several offseason tweaks to their processes.

Jeremiah Fears’ work ethic draws praise
Dumars said the staff has occasionally had to “keep 18-year-old guard Jeremiah Fears out of the gym” because of his relentless work habits. New Orleans selected Fears with the No. 7 pick in June’s draft.

‘Obsessed’ players prized
To become a contender, Dumars said, players must be “obsessed” with basketball. He cited Fears and recent trade acquisition Jordan Poole as examples of that mindset.

Training-camp updates
The executive confirmed that wings Trey Murphy III and Herbert Jones are expected to be full participants when training camp opens this fall.
