The Cleveland Cavaliers dismantled the Los Angeles Lakers 129-99 on Wednesday night at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, stretching their winning streak to five games and reinforcing their mid-season surge.

Key numbers: Cleveland (29-20) has now taken 12 of its last 16 contests, despite playing without injured starters Evan Mobley, Darius Garland and Max Strus. The game was effectively decided in the third quarter, when the Cavaliers clamped down defensively and turned a modest lead into a rout. The entire fourth quarter amounted to extended garbage time.

Mitchell leads balanced attack

Donovan Mitchell paced the hosts with 25 points, four rebounds and five assists, but the All-Star guard had plenty of help. Rookie Jaylon Tyson added 20 points, while NaeQwan Tomlin, Tyrese Proctor and Craig Porter Jr. provided energy off the bench.

Veteran swingman DeAndre Hunter shook off a slow start to finish with 19 points, igniting Cleveland’s decisive third-quarter burst. Dean Wade matched LeBron James with 11 points and continued to handle the dirty work defensively, and center Jarrett Allen produced 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting, nine rebounds and several hustle plays.

Lakers stumble in James’ return home

LeBron James’ latest visit to his home state was a forgettable one. The four-time MVP managed 11 points as Los Angeles (28-18) struggled to generate consistent offense. Luka Dončić carried the scoring load with 29 points, but the Lakers looked increasingly like a one-man show as Cleveland’s depth took over after halftime.

Road test ahead

The Cavaliers now embark on a lengthy Western swing that begins Friday in Phoenix. Mobley remains sidelined and Garland is unlikely to return immediately, leaving Cleveland’s supporting cast to keep the momentum rolling.
