Golden State forward Draymond Green said he is leaning toward declining his $27.7 million player option for the 2026-27 season to pursue a fresh multiyear agreement with the Warriors, according to an interview with Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard.
“In an ideal world, I think the best path would be to decline and extend,” Green told Kawakami. He noted that the final decision will be made after discussions among himself, agent Rich Paul and the team’s front office once the offseason begins.
Opting out would allow Green, 36, to seek greater total guaranteed money and longer-term security, while potentially lowering his 2026-27 salary number and giving Golden State added cap room this summer. The extra flexibility could aid the franchise if it elects to pursue high-profile additions, a scenario Green said is always possible under owner Joe Lacob.
Future alongside Stephen Curry
Addressing his timeline with longtime teammate Stephen Curry, Green said the pair measures their careers “in summers,” estimating they each have “two or three more” off-seasons left to commit fully to NBA preparation.
Confidence in Steve Kerr
Green expressed confidence that head coach Steve Kerr, who has not yet signed an extension, will remain with the Warriors in 2026-27. “We don’t want to play for anyone else,” he said, emphasizing the shared role he, Curry, Klay Thompson and Kerr have had in building the organization’s recent success.
Desired ending in Golden State
The four-time All-Star added that he hopes his tenure ends amicably whenever the time comes. “I want to make sure that whenever my time is up here, it ends the way it’s supposed to end… everybody’s happy, we’ve done great things, and we move forward,” he said.
