The Cleveland Cavaliers turned a shaky mid-season stretch into an aggressive trade-deadline move after leaning heavily on Donovan Mitchell’s leadership, according to an ESPN report by Jamal Collier.
Head coach Kenny Atkinson said Mitchell’s steady approach prevented panic as injuries and losses raised doubts about the roster’s ceiling. “It’s so important that your best player doesn’t go sideways,” Atkinson told ESPN. “Donovan was key to that. He’s a positive guy. He kept us moving in the right direction.”
During the turbulent run, Mitchell averaged 28.5 points while often playing with a depleted lineup. Sources told ESPN the All-Star guard also pushed the front office to avoid complacency at the deadline. Using what Atkinson called the “five whys” analysis, Cleveland shifted its focus from point guard Darius Garland to veteran guard James Harden.
Availability Became a Deciding Factor
Harden’s track record of staying on the floor weighed heavily in the decision. Over the past three seasons he has appeared in 202 games, compared with Garland’s 158. “He plays,” Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers said of Harden. “He didn’t miss games, he didn’t miss practices either.”
Atkinson drew a parallel from baseball, recalling how Cleveland Guardians star José Ramírez calmed his clubhouse during a skid. The coach saw the same influence in Mitchell.
Early Returns Show Promise
Since the trade, center Jarrett Allen has flourished next to Harden, and players describe a unified locker room. “We’re good,” Harden said. “But we’ve got a few more notches to get to.”
As the Cavaliers push toward the postseason, the message inside the organization is clear: waiting is no longer an option.
