Doc Rivers says waiving Cam Thomas was a difficult but necessary decision

Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers offered a brief but pointed explanation after the club released guard Cam Thomas, saying roster needs outweighed individual performance.

“There are things that we don’t need to talk about,” Rivers told reporters, according to The Athletic. “As a coach, you have to make decisions on what’s best for the team at that time.”

Rivers acknowledged the move was “tough” because the 24-year-old had produced during his short stint in Milwaukee, averaging 10.7 points on 43.1 percent shooting over 18 games.

The Bucks’ priorities have shifted as the team sits well outside the Eastern Conference playoff picture, prompting a change in roster strategy. Thomas, who has appeared in 42 games this season between Milwaukee and Brooklyn, is averaging 13.5 points overall.

The third-year guard is free to sign elsewhere, but any new deal would not make him eligible for postseason play.
