Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers said the team does not believe Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered an Achilles injury after the two-time MVP exited Tuesday’s victory over the East-leading Detroit Pistons.
Antetokounmpo played just three minutes before grabbing his lower right leg, limping to the bench and heading straight to the locker room. The apparent non-contact incident initially raised fears of a serious tendon problem.
Rivers told reporters the play was more complicated than it looked in real time. “If you watch, the bump drive, that’s what threw him off balance,” the coach said. “He got bumped and then somebody landed on top of him.”
The forward underwent an MRI, according to The Athletic’s Eric Nehm. Milwaukee has not yet disclosed an official diagnosis or a timetable for his return.
Despite losing their superstar early, the Bucks delivered one of their sharpest performances of the season and improved to 10-13. The organization is expected to release additional medical information on Antetokounmpo soon.
