Dallas Mavericks icon Dirk Nowitzki believes the organization had little choice but to dismiss head of basketball operations Nico Harrison, arguing that the decision should have been made during the offseason.

Appearing on Amazon Prime, as relayed by veteran reporter Marc Stein, Nowitzki said the franchise could not launch the Cooper Flagg era under a “black cloud” created by last season’s stunning Luka Doncic trade. “That trade just made no sense,” Nowitzki stated. “You had this team built around Luka—switchable wings, two lob threats, the whole thing. Then he gets hurt on Christmas, and that’s the last game he ever plays in a Mavs uniform. Fans feel like they never got to see the end of it.”

Nowitzki added he immediately sensed the team’s loyal fan base would not move past the deal. “This definitely set the franchise back,” he said. “But now it’s about building it back up.”

The Mavericks enter play at 3-10 while dealing with a roster in flux. Anthony Davis remains sidelined by a calf strain, and rumors continue to swirl about a possible trade involving the veteran big man.

Nowitzki’s prescription for the franchise was concise: “Time to reset, regroup, and get the organization pointed forward again.”
