Guard Dillon Brooks fractured his left hand during the Phoenix Suns’ win over the Orlando Magic on Saturday, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The injury happened midway through the first quarter when Orlando center Wendell Carter Jr. contested Brooks’ jump shot. Carter appeared to hit Brooks’ non-shooting hand, and the 28-year-old immediately grabbed it in pain. Brooks exited with 4:46 remaining in the period and did not return. Ryan Dunn opened the second half in his place.
Team physicians are expected to determine an official recovery timetable soon. Until then, the Suns have not given a target date for Brooks’ return.
Brooks, acquired from Houston last summer in the Kevin Durant trade, has been central to Phoenix’s resurgence. Through 49 games he is averaging a career-best 21.2 points along with 3.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting 44.1% from the field, 34.3% from three and 85.6% at the foul line. His physical style has also earned him 16 technical fouls, leading to a one-game suspension earlier this season.
The setback comes at a difficult time for the 33-24 Suns, who are battling for a top-six seed in the Western Conference. Star guard Devin Booker was ruled out for at least a week on Saturday with a right hip strain, and reserve guard Jordan Goodwin left the same game because of a calf injury.
