The San Antonio Spurs will be without starting wing Devin Vassell after an MRI revealed a left adductor strain, the club said in a press release on January 2.
Vassell sustained the injury during Monday’s loss to the Cavaliers. Head coach Mitch Johnson told reporters before Friday’s matchup in Indiana that the 25-year-old is expected to miss “more than a few games.”
“We just have to see how he ramps up and feels,” Johnson said. “It shouldn’t be something that bothers him all year, but we want to get him completely right.”
Before sitting out Wednesday’s win over New York, Vassell had started the first 32 games of the 2025-26 campaign, averaging 15.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 31.9 minutes while shooting 37.9 percent from three-point range.
Johnson offered a more upbeat outlook on Victor Wembanyama, calling the star center “day-to-day” and leaving open the possibility that he could play Saturday against Portland. “It’s too quick to say for sure, but we’re encouraged by what we’ve seen,” the coach said.
