San Antonio Spurs guard DeAaron Fox plans to play his first game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 8, when the Spurs visit the New Orleans Pelicans, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Charania said on NBA Today that Friday is being treated as a “ramp-up” day for Fox, who has missed the first eight contests with a hamstring injury. He will remain out for Friday’s NBA Cup matchup against the Houston Rockets in San Antonio.
Fox’s return is expected to give the Spurs their first meaningful stretch featuring Fox alongside Victor Wembanyama. The pair appeared together in only five games after Fox arrived from Sacramento at last season’s trade deadline, a span cut short when Wembanyama was sidelined by deep vein thrombosis.
The Spurs acquired Fox to stabilize the backcourt and maximize Wembanyama’s development. The plan grew more complex when the club landed the No. 2 pick in May’s draft and selected guard Dylan Harper, sparking questions about how Fox, Harper and Stephon Castle might share the floor.
San Antonio reaffirmed its commitment to Fox in August, signing the former All-Star to a four-year maximum extension projected at up to $228.6 million. His comeback comes at a convenient moment: Harper is currently out with a strained left calf and is expected to miss several weeks.
Fox, 27, averaged 25.8 points and 6.3 assists last season with Sacramento before talks on a new deal stalled, leading to the February trade that sent him to the Spurs.
