The Dallas Mavericks believe No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg is close to getting back on the court after missing more than a month with a left mid-foot sprain, league insider Marc Stein reported.
The 19-year-old rookie has been out since the All-Star break. He last played on Feb. 10 and was averaging 20.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists, numbers that kept him firmly in the Rookie of the Year race before the injury.
Flagg is listed as doubtful for Tuesday night’s game against the Charlotte Hornets. Dallas continues its current trip with games in Orlando, Boston and Toronto later in the week, offering several potential return dates.
The matchup in Boston would carry added meaning for the forward, who grew up in Maine and has yet to play an NBA game in New England.
The Mavericks have handled Flagg’s recovery cautiously, but team optimism suggests his absence may end in the near future.
