OAKLAND, Calif. — Two-time MVP Stephen Curry said Thursday he is comfortable with Golden State’s quiet offseason, even as the team continues to negotiate with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga and waits to finalize several pending signings.
“It’s different, for sure,” Curry told reporters at his youth basketball camp. “My confidence is built on the identity we created over the last third of the regular season and the playoff journey.” Training camp is roughly six weeks away, and the 37-year-old guard said he feels no urgency as long as the roster is set by then.
Pending Additions Still in Limbo
The Warriors have yet to make an official move this summer. Veteran center Al Horford, guard De’Anthony Melton and defensive specialist Gary Payton II are expected to sign once the front office resolves Kuminga’s situation, according to multiple reports.
Kuminga Contract Standoff
Kuminga is among the last high lottery picks from the 2021 draft class without an extension. A league source said the 22-year-old forward believes he deserves a deal comparable to Cade Cunningham or Scottie Barnes, while Golden State is looking for a more modest agreement. Limited minutes on an established roster and a slow restricted-free-agent market have added to his frustration.
Curry’s Offseason Routine
Entering his 17th NBA season, Curry said he has shifted his summer focus to “checking off all the boxes of movement and skill set that’s relevant to my game.” He reported no lingering effects from the strained left hamstring that sidelined him for most of the Warriors’ second-round playoff loss to Minnesota. “Pacing myself nice,” he said. “Ready to finish the summer strong. When Media Day comes, I should be primed and ready to go.”
Kerr on Developing Young Talent
Head coach Steve Kerr, appearing on the “Glue Guys” podcast, expressed frustration with limited practice time in today’s league. “We don’t practice anymore,” Kerr said. “So we have to develop these 19-year-old kids without much practice time. Frankly, I’m not great — I’m an older coach. So I lean on the young coaches.”
Front-Office Change
Vice president of basketball development Kent Lacob is leaving the organization. The Athletic reported that informing his father, team owner Joe Lacob, was a difficult conversation and part of a broader reevaluation of his career path.
