The Detroit Pistons’ rapid improvement this season may soon be matched by a milestone for their franchise cornerstone. Cade Cunningham is projected to reach the NBA’s 65-game threshold for major award eligibility on March 23, when Detroit hosts the Los Angeles Lakers, according to ESPN’s latest power rankings.
Clearing that mark would make the third-year guard officially eligible for Most Valuable Player and All-NBA honors, benchmarks established in the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.
The Pistons have already topped 44 wins and face a favorable stretch before meeting Los Angeles. Upcoming opponents include the Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies, all of whom are currently struggling. Success in that span could help Detroit lock down home-court advantage in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Cunningham, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 draft, has emerged as the focal point of Detroit’s resurgence and now stands just games away from becoming eligible for the league’s highest individual accolades.
