Analyst Sees Path for LeBron James to Join Stephen Curry on Warriors

CBS Sports analyst Brad Botkin believes the long-rumored partnership between LeBron James and Stephen Curry in Golden State is more plausible now than in previous off-seasons.
Spears: Warriors eye “major” addition
Botkin’s assessment follows recent remarks by Andscape’s Marc Spears, who said on the “NBA Base” podcast that Curry expects the Warriors to land a marquee player this summer. Spears specifically mentioned Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo and Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James as potential targets during the March 8, 2026 discussion.
Free-agency route favors James
James, 41, is projected to enter unrestricted free agency at season’s end. Unlike a trade for Antetokounmpo—one that would likely strip Golden State of draft picks and core players—James could simply sign with the Warriors without forcing a roster overhaul.
On-court fit still draws interest
Botkin noted that Curry excels off the ball, allowing a ball-dominant forward such as James to orchestrate the offense while still maximizing Curry’s shooting gravity. He added that veteran teammates Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green would not require high usage to remain effective.
Multiple outcomes remain possible
James has several options: re-sign with the Lakers, return to his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers, join another contender, or retire. Until a decision is made, speculation about a Curry-James pairing—and its potential box-office appeal—continues to circulate around the league.
