Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg is not expected to return until at least later next week as he continues to recover from a left mid-foot sprain, head coach Jason Kidd said Friday.
Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft, sat out his sixth straight game on Friday and is projected to miss Sunday’s home matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder as well as Tuesday’s road contest against the Charlotte Hornets. Kidd, asked about Flagg’s availability for the Hornets game, responded, “Probably not that he will play.”
The meeting in Charlotte will open a six-game road trip for Dallas. It also would have matched Flagg against Hornets wing Kon Knueppel, his former Duke teammate and main rival in the Rookie of the Year race.
Dallas initially believed the 19-year-old forward would be ready immediately after the All-Star break, but the MRI-confirmed sprain he suffered on Feb. 10 has persisted. League chatter has suggested the Mavericks might consider shelving Flagg for the remainder of the season to safeguard his long-term health and potentially enhance their lottery odds. The organization has not addressed that possibility publicly, and Kidd has offered no indication such a plan is under consideration.
Flagg has appeared in 49 games this season, averaging 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.2 steals while logging 34.1 minutes per night. He is shooting 48.2% from the field, 30.2% from three-point range and 80.4% from the foul line.
