Guard Collin Sexton made the most of extended minutes on Thursday, scoring 30 points in 38 minutes to propel the Chicago Bulls to a surprise road victory against the Phoenix Suns.
The performance was Sexton’s strongest since joining Chicago last month, underscoring the prominent role he has quickly earned in the Bulls’ backcourt.
“Definitely very appreciative,” Sexton told reporters, via Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. “I always take one day at a time and focus on the now. I appreciate the team and the organization trusting me with the ball down the stretch.”
Sexton, 25, is in the final season of a contract worth nearly $19 million, leaving his long-term status with the franchise uncertain. For now, he said his priority is simple: win games and build trust with head coach Billy Donovan.
The guard also expressed gratitude for Donovan’s leadership while the coach copes with personal losses. Donovan recently lost both his father and mother-in-law.
“I appreciate Coach. He’s been going through a lot,” Sexton said. “My family has been praying for him. For him to come out every day with a smile and encourage us, that means a lot.”
While the Bulls weigh their future roster plans, Sexton remains focused on maximizing the present opportunity.
