The NBA’s relatively calm coaching market over the past year may be headed for a turbulent spring, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line. Citing league sources, Fischer reports that anywhere from eight to 12 franchises could change head coaches once the 2025-26 regular season concludes.
Several current assistants are already drawing early interest, including Sean Sweeney (Spurs), Micah Nori (Timberwolves), Jared Dudley (Nuggets), Dave Bliss (Thunder), Chris Quinn (Heat), Royal Ivey (Rockets) and Luke Walton (Pistons).
Bucks, Wizards monitoring Taylor Jenkins
If Milwaukee parts ways with Doc Rivers, the Bucks are expected to explore a pursuit of Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins, Fischer writes. The Wizards have also quietly eyed Jenkins as a possible replacement should they decide not to retain interim coach Brian Keefe. Washington has not yet determined Keefe’s status as the club attempts to accelerate its rebuild for the 2026-27 campaign.
Pelicans interested in Mosley
Magic coach Jamahl Mosley would be a top target for New Orleans if Orlando opts for a change, sources told Fischer. Pelicans general manager Joe Dumars is believed to be a strong supporter of Mosley’s work. Former Hornets coach James Borrego and Bucks assistant Darvin Ham are also expected to receive consideration if the Pelicans run a full search.
Warriors prefer longer deal for Kerr
Golden State hopes to avoid a one-year “Last Dance” scenario with Steve Kerr. Team officials would like to secure the veteran coach on a multi-season contract if he chooses to stay. The organization is mindful of aligning Kerr’s deal with the timelines of key players such as Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green, whose current agreements all run through at least 2026-27.
Kings evaluating Doug Christie
Sacramento continues to assess interim coach Doug Christie after an injury-plagued season. Christie has one guaranteed season left on his contract, plus a team option for 2027-28. A return is still possible, Fischer notes.
Uncertainty in Portland
The Trail Blazers discussed an extension with acting coach Tiago Splitter earlier in the year, but his future is unclear with new owner Tom Dundon now in charge. Dundon has pledged to review every facet of the organization, including the coaching staff and front office. For now, general manager Joe Cronin’s position appears safe.
