August 20, 2025 — One day after unveiling a revamped ownership structure, Boston Celtics majority owner and team governor William Chisholm and alternate governor Wyc Grousbeck detailed their strategy for sustaining title contention in an interview with The Boston Globe.
Chisholm, who led the consortium that bought the franchise from the Grousbeck family at a $6.1 billion valuation, acknowledged the immediate need to trim payroll and slip below the NBA’s second tax apron. “We’re not playing for second; we’re playing for championships and banners,” he said, stressing that success must come through “talent, leadership” rather than unchecked spending.
Despite cost-cutting, Chisholm predicted the team could outperform projections behind Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard, adding that “real talent” on the roster has yet to reach its ceiling.
The new governor emphasized that his partnership with Grousbeck remains intact. League rules bar Grousbeck from holding the governor title because he owns less than 15 percent of the club, but both men said the change is purely technical. “We’re shoulder to shoulder,” Grousbeck noted, recalling Chisholm’s decision to drop the “governor” label around the office to avoid hierarchy concerns.
The pair also addressed the recent multiyear extension for head coach Joe Mazzulla, who enters what Grousbeck called potentially his toughest season. “We want him happy and empowered,” Grousbeck said. Chisholm added that seeing Mazzulla guide a less-stacked roster will be “really interesting,” expressing full confidence the coach will “crush it.”
