The Boston Celtics will convert Ron Harper Jr. from a two-way slot to a standard contract, signing the 6’5” forward to a two-year deal, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The move was required after Charles Bassey’s second 10-day contract expired overnight on Friday, leaving Boston with only 13 players on standard deals. NBA rules allow teams to dip below 14 standard contracts for no more than 28 days in a season, and the Celtics had already used up that grace period.
Harper, 24, has appeared in 26 games for Boston this season, averaging 3.4 points and 1.6 rebounds in 10.3 minutes. Most of his minutes have come since the All-Star break. The Rutgers product spent the previous three seasons with the Raptors and Pistons before joining the Celtics on a two-way pact.
Because the new agreement covers multiple seasons rather than the remainder of the current campaign, Harper’s 2025-26 cap figure is set at the prorated minimum for a three-year veteran—$123,045 for this year. Even after the signing, Boston remains roughly $38,000 under the luxury-tax line, keeping the team positioned to add a 15th player before the end of the regular season without crossing into tax territory.
