The Boston Celtics will sign free-agent guard Dalano Banton to a 10-day contract on Thursday, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Banton, 26, has appeared in 218 regular-season games since entering the league as a 2021 second-round pick. His NBA résumé includes stints with the Raptors, Celtics, Trail Blazers and, most recently, the Clippers. Last season in Portland, the 6-foot-9 guard averaged 8.3 points, 2.4 assists and 2.0 rebounds in 16.7 minutes across 67 games, including seven starts.
Unable to secure a roster spot at the start of the current campaign, Banton spent most of 2025/26 with the Texas Legends, the Mavericks’ G League affiliate. He signed a 10-day contract with the Clippers earlier this month, but that deal expired earlier this week, clearing the way for his return to Boston, where he played half of the 2023/24 season.
The Celtics have carried just 12 players on standard contracts since a series of trades on Feb. 5. NBA rules allow teams to dip below the usual 14-player minimum for only two weeks at a time—and 28 days total in a season—so Boston must reach the 14-player threshold today. With the club operating close to the luxury-tax line, both of Thursday’s expected additions are likely to be 10-day deals, enabling the roster to drop back to 12 once they expire.
Two-way rookies Max Shulga and John Tonje remain candidates for future promotions because their rookie-minimum salaries would limit tax and apron implications more effectively than veteran-minimum contracts.
