The Boston Celtics will promote guard Max Shulga from a two-way deal to a standard NBA contract that runs through the 2026-27 season, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.
League sources told MassLive the final season of the agreement is non-guaranteed. Shulga’s cap hit for the remainder of the current campaign is $219,460.
Boston has carried only 12 players for the past two weeks to stay under the luxury-tax threshold. The club is approaching the 28-day limit for staying below the league-mandated 14-man roster minimum, forcing two additions by Sunday. Earlier Friday, multiple outlets reported that free-agent center Charles Bassey will sign a 10-day contract, bringing the roster to 14 players.
Upgrading Shulga instead of signing an outside free agent helps the Celtics’ tax planning, because his rookie minimum salary is not subject to tax variance and is lower than the prorated two-year veteran minimum.
Boston is also projected to be able to add a 15th player on the final day of the regular season without triggering the tax.
Shulga, 23, joined the Celtics on a two-way contract in July after being selected with the 57th pick in last year’s draft. The Ukrainian guard has appeared briefly in three NBA games and has averaged 16.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 23 contests with the G League’s Maine Celtics.
