Boston Celtics governor and majority stakeholder Bill Chisholm said the franchise is focused on sustaining success under head coach Joe Mazzulla and president of basketball operations Brad Stevens, calling the pair “extraordinary” in an interview with The Boston Globe published this week.
Chisholm, completing his first season as the team’s principal owner, told reporter Adam Himmelsbach that he has worked to build rapport in the locker room without being intrusive. “I try to be super available, super positive,” he said, adding that he is “a huge fan” of both Mazzulla and Stevens. He referred to Stevens as “the best basketball executive there is.”
Stability seen as competitive edge
The owner contrasted Boston’s situation with what he hears at NBA owners’ meetings, where other clubs grapple with frequent front-office and coaching changes. “I do not take that for granted,” Chisholm said. “I’m going to fight and claw and do everything in my power to make sure we keep it going.”
Addressing cost-cutting perceptions
Boston dipped below the luxury-tax threshold through several roster moves over the past year, prompting speculation the organization was prioritizing savings. Chisholm rejected that notion, insisting every decision is tied to winning. “I have to prove every day—in the near term, medium term, and long term—that I want to win desperately,” he said. “This is not a gap year.”
Future of TD Garden
Chisholm reiterated that the Celtics would prefer to remain at TD Garden, which he called “a great place to play” and one of the league’s best venues for fans and players. The team, along with arena operator Delaware North and the NHL’s Bruins, is examining upgrades. “If we can make it work, we’d love to stay where we are,” he stated. “If that doesn’t work there, we’ll think about other places.”
Chisholm also praised Jaylen Brown’s strong campaign and noted optimism about Jayson Tatum’s comeback from a torn Achilles tendon but did not elaborate further during the interview.
