The Boston Celtics on Tuesday confirmed the completion of their sale to an investor group headed by longtime fan William Chisholm, cementing a change in control that had received NBA Board of Governors approval last week.
Chisholm assumes the position of team governor. Aditya Mittal—reported in May to hold the second-largest stake in the consortium—and former majority owner Wyc Grousbeck have been named alternate governors.
Although an earlier plan would have kept Grousbeck as governor through 2028, the franchise said he will instead serve as chief executive officer and co-owner, sharing day-to-day oversight with Chisholm. Grousbeck retained an ownership share but owns less than the 15 percent required to remain the club’s primary governor.
Additional shareholders include Bruce Beal, Andrew Bialecki, Dom Ferrante, Robert Hale, Mario Ho, Ian Loring and investment firm Sixth Street.
Statements from new and continuing leaders
“This is a dream come true for me and my family,” Chisholm said in the announcement, adding that the group is “committed to building on the legacy of the Celtics and raising banners.”
Grousbeck, who led the franchise for 23 years, said he is “fired up to be shoulder to shoulder with Bill as we pull every lever to go after another banner.”
The transaction formally closes a new chapter for the 17-time NBA champions as they prepare for the upcoming season.
