Celtics Bring Back John Tonje on Two-Way Contract

Boston, MA — The Boston Celtics have re-signed guard John Tonje to a two-way contract, the team announced via its X (formerly Twitter) account after his 10-day agreement expired overnight.

Tonje, 24, arrived from the Utah Jazz in a deadline deal that sent Chris Boucher and a future second-round pick to Salt Lake City. At the time, he was on a two-way pact, but Boston converted him to a 10-day contract on February 19 to stay under the luxury-tax threshold following several cost-cutting moves.

The 6’4” guard made his NBA debut with the Celtics last Tuesday, logging four minutes, and added five more minutes of action on Friday. Selected 53rd overall in the 2025 draft, Tonje had signed a two-way contract with Utah last August but did not appear in an NBA game before the trade.

Boston specifically targeted Tonje because, as a draft-rights rookie, he carries a rookie-minimum cap figure when moved to a standard deal, helping the club manage its tax and apron position. The Celtics are expected to operate with only 12 players for another 14 days once the current pair of 10-day contracts lapse, then elevate guard Max Shulga and add a veteran free agent on rest-of-season minimums in mid-March to remain below the tax line.

Tonje has impressed in the G League, averaging 18.0 points and 4.1 rebounds on .467/.376/.928 shooting across 32 games for the Salt Lake City Stars. Since joining the Maine Celtics, he has totaled 50 points in his first two appearances.

Meanwhile, fifth-year guard Dalano Banton’s 10-day contract with Boston also expired, making him an unrestricted free agent.
