WASHINGTON — The Cleveland Cavaliers relied on another scoring barrage from Donovan Mitchell to edge the Washington Wizards, 130-126, on Friday night.
The All-Star guard poured in 48 points, including 24 in the fourth quarter, as Cleveland erased a 15-point deficit against a team that entered the game with a 3-20 record. According to the Cavaliers, Mitchell’s fourth-quarter total is the highest for any NBA player in a single period this season.
“You’re playing a team that’s 3-and-whatever, and you’re down 15, you can kind of tuck your tails,” Mitchell said after the game. “But we found a way.”
Cleveland moved to 15-11, but the manner of victory highlighted the club’s ongoing reliance on its leading scorer to close out games. Friday’s result counts as a win in the standings, yet the film is expected to provide a reminder of how quickly focus can slip.
