The Cleveland Cavaliers are evaluating both personnel and coaching possibilities after slipping to 15-14, seventh in the Eastern Conference and just above the play-in range, league sources told Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.
Front-office discussions underway
Conversations inside the organization have intensified following recent defeats to undermanned Golden State, Charlotte and Chicago, along with a narrow victory over Washington. While no decision is said to be imminent, sources indicated Cleveland could explore a major roster shake-up, a coaching change, or a combination of both if results do not improve soon.
Atkinson’s future in question
Externally, executives are debating whether head coach Kenny Atkinson’s skill set fits the club’s current stage. One league source described Atkinson as “great at building a young team into a winning program,” but wondered if his influence “stops there.” Should the Cavaliers pivot, star guard Donovan Mitchell is believed to favor assistant coach Johnnie Bryant as an interim replacement, according to Afseth.
Garland draws trade interest
Point guard Darius Garland remains a focal point for rival teams, who view him as a lower-risk avenue to upgrade the position compared with other potential star guards. There is also a league-wide belief that Garland might eventually seek an opportunity to run a team without sharing the backcourt spotlight with Mitchell.
The Sacramento Kings and Minnesota Timberwolves have kept tabs on Garland’s availability, though constructing a workable package for either franchise would be challenging.
Allen deemed less movable
Center Jarrett Allen is considered far less likely to be dealt. Sources said Cleveland would be reluctant to send the 25-year-old to another Eastern Conference team unless an “irresistible” offer emerged.
Peripheral moves under scrutiny
The club’s depth has also come under fire. The trade for De’Andre Hunter has not produced the expected boost, and free-agent signee Max Strus, who is on a lucrative deal, has yet to appear this season.
“The Cavs are not as deep as they thought they’d be,” one executive told Afseth, adding that the front office has “struck out on the margins.”
Dean Wade a contract to watch
Forward Dean Wade, earning $6.6 million in the final year of his contract, is viewed as a potential trade chip before the deadline. Executives see Wade’s expiring deal as a way for Cleveland to adjust its salary structure, even if the transaction would not generate major headlines.
With limited flexibility and mounting pressure to solidify playoff positioning, Cleveland’s next steps remain under close league observation.
