The Cleveland Cavaliers have moved guard Lonzo Ball and two future second-round draft picks to the Utah Jazz in a three-team trade completed Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

As part of the agreement, the Jazz are sending center Jock Landale to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for cash considerations.

Why Cleveland made the move

The Cavaliers trimmed salary and cleared a roster spot by offloading Ball’s contract. The deal puts Cleveland roughly $10 million closer to slipping beneath the NBA’s second tax apron while leaving the club’s regular rotation and core players untouched.

Utah’s plans

Utah executed the swap primarily to obtain the additional draft capital and is expected to waive Ball once the trade is finalized, Charania reported.

Front-office history

The trade marks the seventh transaction between the Cavaliers and Jazz since Koby Altman became Cleveland’s president of basketball operations in 2017.
