The Cleveland Cavaliers are receiving an unusually high number of trade calls from rival front offices as the team battles through an inconsistent stretch, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Cleveland sits at 15-13 and has fallen in the Eastern Conference standings after a series of losses, prompting executives around the league to gauge the club’s willingness to adjust its roster. Despite the rising interest, two players are reportedly off limits: All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell and 24-year-old forward Evan Mobley. Mitchell has been the team’s primary offensive catalyst, while Mobley already owns a Defensive Player of the Year award and continues to develop offensively.
Charania noted that every other player is at least being mentioned in conversations, even as the Cavaliers front office hesitates to make significant changes. The organization hopes to evaluate the roster when fully healthy, something it has rarely enjoyed this season because of injuries to Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen, Max Strus and Sam Merrill.
Opposing teams are expected to ask about Garland, Allen and De’Andre Hunter, among others. Cleveland’s stance could depend on results over the next several weeks. A turnaround might quiet trade speculation, while continued struggles could make the Cavaliers one of the more active teams as the February deadline approaches.
