ESPN analytics writer Kevin Pelton forecasts the Cleveland Cavaliers will finish first in the Eastern Conference this season despite a modest projection of 50.1 victories.

Pelton’s latest win-loss model, released Monday, predicts Cleveland will slide from last year’s league-best 64 wins after what he describes as an expected “regression to the mean.” The analyst noted that injuries already threaten the lineup, with All-Star guard Darius Garland and wing Max Strus slated to miss the start of the campaign. Their absences will push new head coach Kenny Atkinson to dig deeper into his perimeter rotation than he did during the Cavaliers’ breakout run.

“The Cavaliers are probably due some regression to the mean after jumping from 48 wins to 64 last season,” Pelton wrote, adding that a reduced win total should still be enough to outpace the rest of the conference.

Sportsbooks remain slightly more bullish. Most betting markets currently set Cleveland’s over/under between 56 and 57 victories, while Pelton himself acknowledged he would peg the team at 59.

The 2024-25 regular season opens next month, giving the Cavaliers limited time to regain full health before launching their bid for a second consecutive No. 1 seed.
