CLEVELAND — Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson said Thursday he believes injured swingman Max Strus will suit up before the start of the postseason.
Asked directly if he expects Strus to return during the regular schedule, Atkinson answered twice, “Yes.” The 29-year-old has begun on-court workouts as he recovers from a broken foot sustained before the season. Cleveland has 27 games remaining.
“Getting Max back anytime before the playoffs will be a huge bonus,” Atkinson told reporters. “Of course you’d love to have some runway — regular-season games — but as long as we get him for a playoff run, that’s a win for us. It’s trending much more positive, but there’s still a ways to go.”
Strus averaged 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists while shooting 44.2 percent from the field and 38.6 percent from three-point range in 50 games last season. He missed the first 27 contests of that campaign because of an ankle injury.
When Strus does return, he will join a reshaped roster following the additions of James Harden, Dennis Schröder and Keon Ellis.
