James Harden took the floor Sunday despite a fractured right thumb, returning from a two-game absence to help the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Brooklyn Nets.
The 36-year-old guard needed only nine field-goal attempts to score 22 points and added eight assists and nine rebounds in the victory.
After the game, Harden told reporters his choice to play was straightforward. “Just love to play basketball—even without the money,” he said, according to Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor. “Basketball is something that we do and it’s a safe place… You just get addicted to it.”
Harden acknowledged that time is becoming a factor in his career. “I’m blessed to be able to play in this league for as long as I have,” he said. “I have a few more years left to play basketball, so I want to definitely cherish them and not have any regrets playing.”
The Cavaliers, now 38-24, face the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday in a rematch of Friday’s overtime loss. Team officials indicated Harden is expected to be available.
