The NBA has fined the Cleveland Cavaliers $250,000 for breaching the league’s player participation policy after the club held out guard Darius Garland from a nationally televised matchup against the Toronto Raptors, the league confirmed on Thursday.
The incident occurred one day after Garland had played in a regular-season game. Following a review, the NBA determined the 23-year-old guard was healthy enough to appear and should not have been withheld from the primetime broadcast.
Under the policy, resting a star without an approved medical justification triggers escalating penalties. Cleveland’s first violation last month cost the organization $100,000. Thursday’s ruling brings the total to $250,000 for the second infraction.
Future offenses grow considerably more expensive: a third violation would carry a $1.25 million penalty, while a fourth would reach $2.5 million, with each subsequent fine increasing by another $1 million.
The Cavaliers are the only team to rack up two violations only 23 games into the season; the league said the other 29 franchises have combined for just one.
Cleveland has navigated various injuries throughout the roster, but the NBA reiterated that any absence involving a designated star must be medically justified and properly documented, especially during national television windows.
