Cavaliers weigh multi-team scenarios involving De’Andre Hunter ahead of trade deadline

The Cleveland Cavaliers are exploring several trade constructions built around forward De’Andre Hunter as Thursday’s NBA trade deadline approaches, league sources told HoopsHype.

Framework with Kings

Cleveland and the Sacramento Kings have discussed a deal in which Hunter would be routed to Sacramento, according to the report. The Cavaliers would receive guard Keon Ellis, veteran point guard Dennis Schroder and forward Dario Saric. A third club could be added to absorb Saric’s $5.43 million expiring contract, with second-round draft compensation attached.

Ellis earns $2.3 million this season, becomes extension-eligible on Feb. 9 and would enter unrestricted free agency this summer if no agreement is reached. Schroder is owed $14.81 million in 2024-25 and carries a partial guarantee for 2027-28. The combined $21.8 million of Ellis, Schroder and Saric would fit inside Cleveland’s second-apron restrictions, which prevent the team from taking back more salary than it sends out.

Hunter, owed $24.91 million next season, has struggled for consistency since leaving Atlanta and remains under contract through 2026-27.

The two clubs have also examined an alternative package that would send Ellis and guard Malik Monk to Cleveland. The Cavaliers are hesitant because Monk still has two seasons and $41.77 million remaining on his contract.

Talks with Lakers

HoopsHype adds that Cleveland has held separate conversations with the Los Angeles Lakers about a Hunter arrangement. That version would bring forward Rui Hachimura and rookie guard Dalton Knecht to the Cavaliers, with the Brooklyn Nets mentioned as a possible salary-matching facilitator.

The Cavaliers have been active on the phones for weeks, seeking roster upgrades while staying under the luxury-tax second apron. All discussions remain fluid with the deadline set for Thursday afternoon.
