Cavaliers Enter Camp Debating Biggest Roster Need

With training camp opening in fewer than two weeks, the Cleveland Cavaliers are again being discussed as Eastern Conference contenders. Still, team observers disagree on where the roster remains thin.
ESPN points to perimeter depth as the primary concern. Guard Darius Garland is recovering from off-season toe surgery, and forward Max Strus is not expected back until at least December after suffering a Jones fracture. Additional injuries could further test the backcourt and wing rotation.
The outlook on the perimeter could improve by spring. Donovan Mitchell remains an All-Star scorer, Garland is projected to return during the season, and Strus is regarded as one of the Eastern Conference’s top floor spacers. Cleveland also added De’Andre Hunter at last season’s trade deadline, re-signed Sam Merrill, reunited with Larry Nance Jr. over the summer, and signed Lonzo Ball to provide another ball-handling option.
Others see a larger gap in the frontcourt behind Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. While Nance offers versatility, the roster lacks a traditional backup center capable of absorbing minutes, protecting the rim, and supplying physical play in the postseason.
The front office still holds one open roster spot. Veterans such as Thomas Bryant, Mo Bamba, or Precious Achiuwa are among the available big men who could address that need.
