Cavaliers reach 22-19 midpoint after 123-112 home defeat to Jazz

The Cleveland Cavaliers dropped a 123-112 decision to the Utah Jazz on Monday at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, slipping to 22-19 as the NBA season reaches its halfway mark.

Head coach Kenny Atkinson downplayed the setback, telling reporters, “You gotta keep perspective. I know people think it’s the end of the world, (that we lost) to the Utah Jazz. You can’t think like that.”

Midseason concerns

Despite Atkinson’s call for calm, the loss highlighted several ongoing issues. Atkinson and observers pointed to inconsistent energy, offensive disarray and continued difficulty defending the three-point line. The Cavaliers’ 19 defeats have often come in discouraging fashion, and even some victories have raised alarms about focus and execution.

Forward Evan Mobley finished with 15 points and nine rebounds but has yet to make the anticipated leap in his third season. Center Jarrett Allen and guard De’Andre Hunter have also fallen short of last year’s form, while point guard Darius Garland—who contributed 23 points and eight assists Monday—has only recently begun to show signs of recovery from an uneven start.

Donovan Mitchell remains the club’s most reliable performer, adding 21 points against Utah. However, no other regular has delivered steady production, a shortfall attributed to both injuries and lapses in concentration.

Roster moves and trade outlook

Cleveland’s mid-November trade for Lonzo Ball has not produced the desired impact, and the team continues to miss the defensive presence of Isaac Okoro and the backcourt stability once provided by Ty Jerome. Young reserves Jaylon Tyson, Craig Porter Jr. and NaeQwan Tomlin have supplied occasional sparks—Tyson scored 11 points and Tomlin 13 on Monday—but the coaching staff acknowledges that veterans must drive any sustained turnaround.

The front office is exploring trade possibilities before the Feb. 5 deadline, though significant moves are complicated by salary-cap constraints. Meaningful roster changes may need to wait until the offseason if no workable deal emerges.

Game notes

Utah rookie Keyonte George led all scorers with 32 points, while former Cavalier Lauri Markkanen added 28. Kevin Love, another ex-Cleveland standout, received a warm ovation and chipped in 11 points off the Jazz bench. For the Cavaliers, Sam Merrill posted 14 points.

At the midpoint, Cleveland sits closer to the play-in tier than the Eastern Conference elite it expected to challenge. The club faces a tightening schedule and mounting urgency to regain the form that produced last season’s 64-18 record.
