The Cleveland Cavaliers plan to feature second-year swingman Jaylon Tyson in their regular rotation when training camp opens late next month, team president of basketball operations Koby Altman and head coach Kenny Atkinson confirmed.
Tyson’s performance as a rookie and during the Las Vegas Summer League convinced the organization that additional playing time is warranted. His emergence helped the front office feel comfortable trading defensive specialist Isaac Okoro to the Chicago Bulls for injured guard Lonzo Ball, a move that frees up minutes on the wing.
“I think my rookie season went really well,” the 22-year-old told SI.com. “I didn’t get the most opportunity in the world, but the things I learned are going to suit me down my career.”
Tyson appeared in 47 games last season—many in late-game situations—averaging 3.7 points for a Cleveland team that finished 64-18. Listed at 6-foot-5, he showed the ability to handle the ball, create for teammates and defend multiple positions.
Atkinson has already outlined expectations for year two. “You had a great rookie season. Everything we asked you to do, you did above and beyond,” the coach told Tyson, noting that a larger role awaits if he remains prepared.
With training camp on the horizon and rotation minutes available, Cleveland views Tyson as a potential X-factor heading into the 2025-26 campaign.
