The Cleveland Cavaliers are again facing uncertainty on the injury front as guard Darius Garland and wing Sam Merrill undergo evaluations this weekend after leaving Wednesday’s road win in Philadelphia with new ailments.
Garland, the team’s No. 2 scorer, is experiencing soreness in his right big toe. While the discomfort is on the opposite foot from the toe injury that required offseason surgery, it mirrors the issue that has flared up at several points this season.
Merrill suffered a sprained right hand. Although he missed about a month earlier in the year with a similar problem, team sources told Cleveland.com reporter Chris Fedor that the current bruising and swelling are considerably less severe.
Head coach Kenny Atkinson said Merrill was able to use the hand without restriction before Friday night’s game, also in Philadelphia. The Cavaliers proceeded to win that matchup despite the short-handed rotation.
Cleveland has managed a shifting injury report for much of the season, and the next round of medical examinations will determine whether additional lineup adjustments are needed.
The Cavaliers return home to face the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday at 2:30 p.m. EST.
