The Cleveland Cavaliers have joined the New York Knicks in expressing interest in free-agent guard Malik Beasley, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Scotto reported on August 24 that both clubs have contacted the 28-year-old shooting guard, who is coming off a standout season with the Detroit Pistons. Despite holding standard roster openings, the Cavaliers and Knicks can only offer Beasley a minimum-salary contract.
Beasley is no longer considered a target in the federal gambling probe led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, his attorneys recently told ESPN’s Shams Charania. Michael McCann of Sportico noted that the veteran guard could still be classified as a “subject” of the investigation and may face a separate review from the NBA regarding possible league rule violations.
The 6’4” wing finished second in NBA Sixth Man of the Year voting last season after averaging 16.3 points while shooting a career-best 41.6% from three-point range. His 319 made threes ranked second in the league.
New York’s interest in Beasley is partly tied to Knicks senior vice president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas, who awarded the guard a lucrative contract while running the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2020.
