Cam Thomas Takes Qualifying Offer; Nets Provide Health Updates Ahead of Camp

The Brooklyn Nets will open training camp with guard Cam Thomas playing on a one-year qualifying offer worth just under $6 million after the restricted free agent and the team failed to reach a long-term agreement earlier this month.
General manager Sean Marks told reporters the stalemate does not necessarily mean Thomas will leave after the season. “A common ground couldn’t be met this summer, [but that] doesn’t mean he’s not a Net in the future or throughout the season,” Marks said.
Thomas, who can become an unrestricted free agent next July, said the short deal gives him control over his future. “You want to keep the power that you have as a player as much as you can, as long as you can,” he explained. “I’d rather control my situation… just going to finish the year and we’ll see what happens.”
Highsmith Targets Opening Night
Forward Haywood Highsmith, acquired from Miami in mid-August, underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee suffered during an offseason workout. Now 6½ weeks removed from the procedure, Highsmith is jogging, spot-shooting and taking part in light contact drills. He expects to be available for the regular-season opener.
Rookies Limited to Start Camp
No. 8 overall pick Egor Demin is rehabbing a plantar fascia tear sustained after Summer League and will enter camp on a restricted program. Fellow first-rounder Drake Powell (No. 22) continues to work back from left knee tendinopathy and has not been cleared for full 5-on-5 action. “It’s just important to stay present and follow whatever plan I have from the physicians,” Demin said.
Claxton Says Back Is Healthy
Center Nic Claxton, who signed a four-year, $100 million extension last season, saw his scoring, rebounding and block numbers dip while managing a nagging back issue. The 25-year-old said the back is no longer a concern and that he is “mentally and physically ready to go” when camp begins.
